Working Stage of Group

This unit focuses on the working stage of a group. It is the most important component of a group as this is the time when a majority of the work gets done within and between the members. Understanding this progression can help you as the group leader to guide the process more effectively and not overreact when the inevitable conflicts develop. There are literally hundreds of theories of group development, so it is important to recognize that this process can be seen through many lenses. Group leaders must have some developmental framework by which they understand the group process as it emerges. It is always important to base your group facilitation on a sound theoretical approach.
This week you will continue your participation in your online support group. Be sure to process through your own thoughts and feelings about the group.
You will also conduct your psycho-educational group. It is important to note the dynamics and the flow of the group as you run it.
To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:
1. Identify the therapeutic factors believed to be the most important ones for the success of a group.

• Workbook pages 41–52.

Self-Help Group Preparation
Next week you will attend a self-help group such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Gamblers Anonymous (GA), Overeaters Anonymous (OA), Children of Alcoholics (CoA), Al-Anon, et cetera. During your attendance if you are asked to speak you may indicate “pass” if you are uncomfortable. This includes giving your name. You may tell the group that you are there to learn about the program.
This week, you should choose your group.

Discussion 1: 1 page needed with minimum of 250 words and 2 references.
Psycho-Educational Group Leadership
This week you performed a psycho-educational group. Share that experience in your discussion. Be sure that you include what your psycho-educational group was about, who attended, and what the experience was like for you. Discuss what you liked about running the group and what you would do differently.

Therapeutic Factors of Group
Discuss the therapeutic factors described on pages 279–294 in your Corey, Corey and Corey text. Identify which factors you believe to be the most important for the success of the group. If you have been a group participant or facilitated a group in the past, give examples from your experience that may illustrate some of these therapeutic factors.
