We Should Not Eat Foods Which Use Artificial Flavor
Almost all our packaged, canned, or prepared foods, condiments and most beverages contain artificial flavors. Artificial flavoring can be described as a product that is added to food in order to change or to augment the natural flavor of that food. Food flavors can either be natural or artificial. However most of the flavorings used in our food industry are nature-identical which means that they are chemicals which are derived from the natural flavors.
They are synthesized chemically in our laboratories instead of being extracted from our natural foods. These flavors are extracted from the natural source though boiling, leaching or squeezed out and they are passed through chromatography process and replicated in the laboratory. Scientist can often mix these different flavoring agents in order to produce some preferred flavor. (Fife, 2008) In this paper, we are going to review the problems and solutions which are associated with artificial flavoring. We will review how artificial flavors lead to false food or alteration of natural flavor, increased health problems like neurotoxicity, and contribution to lifestyle disease like overweight. We will also review possible solutions like use of natural flavor, complete elimination of artificial flavor, and correct labeling.
