According to the United Nations, violence against women can be described as any particular act of violence which is gender- based with an outcome or a likely outcome of mental, physical and sexual harm or bring suffering to the involved women, inclusive of threats to such acts, depriving women of liberty or coercing them to engage in activities against their will, whether privately or publicly (WHO, 2009).
Violence against women comes in many forms including physical, emotional abuse by a partner who is intimate with the woman. It can also be in form of sexual or physical abuse from close members of the family. Being sexually abused and harassed by people in authority such as employers, teachers or police officers can also fall under violence against women.
