Treatment for Culturally and Ethnically Diverse Groups

You will all likely encounter many clients from different cultures in your professional experience. It is extremely important that you learn about other cultures and question your own prejudices. Your intentions may be good and your knowledge of AOD treatment excellent, but if you do not have an understanding of cultural and ethnic differences, your ability to help a client from a background that differs from yours will likely be significantly hampered—or even result in a negative experience for the client.
Assessing both counselor’s and client’s states of racial identity can be a central factor in the fit between counselor and client and in the success of the therapeutic process.
