Transport System Modeling

As per the requirement, I chose to select the Adelaide to Glenelg route. The route seems to be
one of the busiest routes since it connects two places that are highly populous i.e. Adelaide and
Glenelg. Adelaide has different facilities and social amenities making it many people’s
destination point. Some of the amenities and facilities in Adelaide are schools, parks, a
university, a mall, a zoo, Adelaide oval and various others. This is clear indication that Adelaide
is a busy area and is mostly used for business purposes and not as a place of residence.

Glenelg on the other hand is closer to a beach making it many people’s destination either as an
area of residence or for leisure purposes. One of the main reasons why people would head to
Glenelg is because of the availability of a beach and a beach house where fun activities can be
carried out. The route from Adelaide to Glenelg has a number of Terraces along the way and
using light rail to maneuver through the terraces is just efficient. Since the route is busy, many
people are expected to use light rail to travel since it is cheaper and faster. The route is also
less prone to accidents since it mostly passes through parks where there are lesser factors that
may cause accidents i.e. lesser buildings and lesser population.

Lastly, the Adelaide – Glenelg route is quite straight forward making it hard for anyone going
through the route to get lost along the way. There are lesser meanders involved and the light rail
road is in an almost straight route. This enables faster and safer travelling since trains on the
light rails are able to move at a faster speed. Below is a diagram that shows the Adelaide –
Glenelg route.

Overall Assignment Aim:

In this assignment, you are required to provide definitions to key transport planning concepts and terms, and

demonstrate their application. The aim of this assignment is to develop your knowledge of transport planning concepts and terms in order to provide you with confidence to solve transport planning problems.

REVISED DUE DATE: 24 August (via Learnonline)

EQUIVALENT ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: 1000 words (text and figures/graphs/tables may supplement your text)

ASSIGNMENT WEIGHTING: 20% (Each question is of equal value)

ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION: WORD document format, uploaded via the Assignment submission portal for the Learnonline Course website.

The objectives of this assignment are to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of important definitions, terms and concepts that are

used in transport planning;

  • be able to demonstrate the application of terms and concepts in transport and planning to solve or

analyse particular transport planning problems; and

  • draw on relevant literature in the field of transport and planning to correctly identify transport

definitions, terms and concepts.

Please answer all questions.

  1. Define the concept of trip generation, and discuss why it is important in transport modelling.
  2. Define the terms ‘trip origin’ and ‘trip destination’ in terms of how that are used to define the concept of a trip. Why is it important in transport modelling to characterize trips in terms of their origins and destinations?
  3. Define and discuss the importance of the concept of modal choice in modelling trip activities.
  4. What is ‘route assignment’, and why is it important in modelling a transport network?
  5. Why is analyzing the ‘trip-rate’ important for different types of land uses?
  6. Why is it important to analyze peak trip flows in a transport network when modelling the demand for travel?
  7. Select one travel mode, and rate its environmental, economic, social, health and safety advantages as high, medium or low, briefly providing key evidence to support each of your claims.
  8. Why is travel behaviour important to analyze when investigating trip flows in a transport network? Discuss the characteristics of travel behaviour that would be of interest in undertaking an analysis of trip flows.
  9. Define the concept ‘autonomous vehicles’ (AVs), and discuss the key urban transport implications for urban travel if AVs were to replace conventional motor vehicles.
  10. The concept ‘Level of Service’ is used to assess the performance of transport networks (typically involving either motor vehicle traffic, pedestrians or cyclists). Discuss how this concept affects the capacity of a transport network and why it is an important transport planning consideration.
