The Motives that Influence People to Work in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry

  1. Introduction

Hospitality industry is one of the main employers in a country (Buultjens & Cairncross, 2009). The industry is big and hence it employs a large number of people including students from colleges and universities. It is however, imperative to understand the factors or motives that influence people to work in the hospitality industry. In the current business world, the hospitality and tourism industry has become very competitive and hence managers and hotel owners need to increase their employee motivation in order to be in continuous development (Kingir & Mesci, 2010; Karatepe & Uludağ, 2007). The study discusses the previous studies on the motivation of people to work in the hospitality industry and the research methodologies used in data collection and analysis. The study analyses data collected through interviews and interprets them to give a succinct conclusion. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to survey employees in the hospitality and tourism industry in Australia to determine their perceptions towards motivational factors. The main research question is; what are the factors that influence people to work in the tourism and hospitality industry? To answer this question, a quantitative research was conducted and the respondents’ responses analysed, interpreted and discussed.
