Counselors are ethically obligated to manage the relationship and maintain professional boundaries. This unit discusses the various aspects of the counseling relationship and the skills necessary to provide treatment.
Objectives
To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:
1. Analyze the roles and functions of human services professionals that provide effective mental health services to clients of diverse ages, backgrounds, and exceptional abilities, including strategies for differentiated interventions in this setting.
2. Investigate professional roles, functions, and relationships with other human service providers, including strategies for interagency/interorganizational collaboration, consultation, communications, and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
3. Describe how counselors choose culturally appropriate modalities for each phase of a counseling relationship.
4. Describe individual, couple, family, group, and community strategies appropriate for working with and advocating for a specific culturally diverse population, including multicultural competencies.
5. Identify the range of mental health service delivery—such as inpatient, outpatient, partial treatment, and aftercare—and the clinical mental health counseling services networks appropriate to the identified needs of clients.
6. Describe the purpose of the intake interview, the diagnosis, the treatment plan, and case conceptualization.
