In the last couple of years, social media has become an imperative aspect of many people in the world. More than ever before, the global population is accessing and using various platforms of social media for different reasons (Knight and Cook, 2013). One of the main reason why people access social media is to get updated on what is happening around them and in the world. Individual journalists and media organizations have embraced social media as a platform to inform their audiences on what is happening around the world through real time updates. Similarly, journalists and media companies have been in the forefront in sourcing for information in different social media platforms. A good example of how social media has been successfully used in social media is New York Times use of Instagram and twitter to report about Hurricane Irene. This paper explores how New York Times was successful the social media platforms.
