Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. The country transverse both Europe and Asia and has a rich history that adorns its military accomplishments. Russia was a part of Soviet Union that was considered a superpower before the adored position was snatched by United States after the Second World War. Russia is also feared due to its nuclear arsenal that is considered a threat to the world considering its aggressive and controversial policies towards other countries. The history of development of nuclear weapons dates back to the Second World War when United States used atomic bomb to end Japans aggressiveness in the war. U.S dropped atomic bombs that destroyed Nagasaki and Hiroshima cities.
Although the devastating effects of these two bombs were to act as a lesson to the world on how bombs can destroy the world, they catalyzed a feeling of fear in many countries and this led to efforts to acquire military weapons for self protection. Since 1960s, the world has been engulfed in a nuclear arms race. The era of cold war brought about unprecedented arms race in the world that has never been experienced before. Both United States and Soviet Union, together with their allies, put in place programs that were aimed at increasing their military strength against their enemies. However, nuclear arms race took a two horse race between United States and Soviet Union and up to date, both U.S and Russia retains the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Although both countries have signed different treaties including START and others, they retain a sizable number of nuclear war heads. Russia still retains more nuclear warhead than United States although this remains controversial.
