The conceptual understanding of poverty and measuring its extent in rural and urban areas remains a great challenge in tackling the issue of poverty. Tackling extreme poverty has been entrenched as one of the Millennium Development Goals but it has not been easy to deal with the problem. Poverty encompasses many aspects ranging from inadequate consumption, inadequate income, asset base, lack of basic infrastructure and service, and other many others.
However many counties have been measuring poverty in terms of the percentage of population falling below the poverty lines. The United Nations measures poverty in terms of individual who live on less than one dollar per day. Due to this variability in measuring poverty, research has found out that there are many people who are thought to be well off but are living in poverty.
