Richard the Lionheart

ANSWER

Richard I, the third son of King Henry II, was born on 8th September 1157 and was the King of England from the 6th of July 1189 until his death on the 6th of April 1199 (Gillingham 2002). He also ruled as Lord of Cyprus, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Gascony, Count of Nantes, Count of Maine, Count of Anjou and Overlord of Brittany at different times during the same period. Richard I was known as Richard the Lionheart, even prior to his accession as king, because of his bravery and reputation as a great warrior and military leader (Turner and Heiser 2000). He was regarded as a hero in his day and has repeatedly been depicted as one in works of literature.
