The Empire State College (ESC) is an accredited constituent college of State University of New York (SUNY), with 18,000 students passing through the college every year. Founded in 1971, ESC is one of the 13 colleges accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and it offers SUNY degrees at sites in New York State and online (ESC, “About us”).
As a part of SUNY, ESC advocates for a broad education that relates to concepts already garnered by its students and the college aims at enabling the students, by infusion of critical thinking skills in the students, to put the knowledge learnt to use. The college calls for the diversification of educational perspectives, regardless of whether the mode of learning is through distance learning, contract learning or cross-registration where credit earned is gauged through standard tests such as Regents College examinations (ESC “State University of New York General Education Requirements”). Another way of meeting this requirement is through credit transfers from institutions regionally accredited or accredited by World Education Services (ESC, “Student Degree Planning Guide 2010 – 2011” 27).
