Relapse, Prevention, and Recovery

Introduction
A counselor’s views on relapse, prevention, and recovery stem directly from his or her theoretical and philosophical orientation. As you have encountered these topics in your readings earlier in the course, you will see that we are circling back to them now in this unit’s discussions.

Objectives
To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the issues involved in maintaining abstinence.
2. Discuss theories of relapse and relapse prevention.
3. Demonstrate competence in designing relapse prevention plans for clients.

• In your Substance Abuse Counseling text, read Chapter 10, “Retaining Sobriety: Relapse Prevention Strategies,” pages 261–285.
• Take time to thoroughly review the following resources. You should use this information to incorporate into upcoming discussions and assignments:
• “Chapter 9: Relapse Prevention,” from the SAMHSA publication, Treatment for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse: Opportunities for Coordination.
• National Recovery Month, also from SAMHSA.
• “How to Develop a RP Plan,” from the Gorski-Cenaps team.
• Faces and Voices of Recovery.
