Implementation of massive projects, especially those that pertain to mining, always attract a lot of environmental conflict, because in one way or another they have an impact on the environment (Bryant, 1995). Pilliga coal seam gas project is one of the projects that have elicited heated environment debates and the project risks being derailed by opposition from different stakeholders. The project, which is expected to have massive economic returns, is opposed on the grounds of possible environmental pollution and the history of the mining company, Santos, which has been previously fined for environmental pollution (Miskelly & Daniel, 2017). As will be discussed in this study, there are different stakeholders who have expressed reservations about this project. This study will examine the environmental conflicts facing Pilliga coal seam gas project and discuss possible solutions that could save the project from the current conflicts.
