Angie Smith is a 22 years old female who has been diagnosed with chronic paranoid schizophrenia. She was diagnosed with the condition five years ago. Because the condition is chronic, she has been spending most of her time institutionalized but there are some times when she has been living independently although she is re-institutionalized every time she attempts to live independently. However, the problem is that she has been confirmed 11 weeks pregnant. This spells danger for both the unborn child and the mother as well. She had been taking psychiatric medication which raises the risk of giving birth to a child with defects. Angie states clearly that she is determined to carry the pregnancy to full term and she categorically states that abortion is against her principles. However, this is not yet confirmed which means it will take a medical examination to determine the condition of the child. In addition, her psychiatrist thinks that she is not in a position to become a competent parent because she cannot make meaningful moral decision. The same sentiment is shared by her mother who believes that the trauma associated with labor and delivery will make her mental condition even worse. Her mother is not in a position to take care of the baby and she is concerned that Angie will have to give up the custodian of the baby, which will leave her suffering.
