Social, Economic, and Political Factors Influencing the Delivery of Health Care in NSW

  1. Aging population – there is a growing cohort of old Australians who increasingly influence the delivery of healthcare in NSW (Scanlon, 2017). The population of aging NSW residents who are above 70 years continue to bulge and demand for healthcare services for this population increases. More nurses are required to provide elderly care.
  2. Nursing shortage –Australia is hit by a nursing shortage. This has been worsened by industrial actions with nurses demanding better working conditions. In NSW, most nurses are on 457s visas, meaning they are foreign works and their dramatic decline has affected nursing care (Gothe-Snape&Jovanovic, 2017).
