Models of Drug Addiction

Introduction
This unit focuses on models of drug addiction: the moral, sociocultural, psychological, disease, and biopsychosocial models. None of these are presented as “the truth.” Rather, the authors of your text present a view that it is important for addiction counseling professionals to be able to recognize the relative strengths and weaknesses of each model. Even if you gravitate toward one of the models, it is important to be open minded about its limitations.

This week, consider these questions:
What model(s) do you think most accurately reflect the etiology of AOD addictions?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of each model presented?
Objectives
To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of recent and relevant literature related to providing treatment.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of theories regarding the etiology of drug addiction.
3. Discuss how models of addiction may impact treatment plans for clients.
4. Understand the models of addiction.
