Task Description
Compose a research essay in response to one of the following questions;
1) Analyze the different temporalities of television as it moves from broadcast modes of
distribution to on demand services like Netflix, Stan, etc. What does your analysis
suggest about how television is changing as a “service” and in its relationship to
public life?
2) Is domestication a useful concept for understanding contemporary mobile devices
and phones? How do these devices rework the boundaries between public and
private space in everyday life?
3) Analyse a recent ‘media event’. What rituals and forms of participation did the event
consist of? What broader social meaning(s) did the event reinforce?
4) What is meant by the phrase mediatisation of space? Analyse a specific example of
media that reveals how the experience and valuing of public space in everyday life is
increasingly infused with signs, symbols and representations.
In answering any of the above questions you must consult the academic resources
discussed in the lectures. You will need to research your answer by locating at least three
recent research articles from academic journals and books that are relevant to
understanding the issues that implicated by the question. These sources should come from
outside the course readings and be a product of your own research on the topic. By “recent”,
we mean they are published from 2010 onwards.
Naturally, you must include a List of References with your essay and it must be formatted
according to the Harvard In-text referencing system. You can find information on how to

accessible via the course Moodle site by the due date and time. Your paper should appear in
12-point font, double spaced and contain appropriate margins. Your assignment will be
marked late if you fail to successfully upload or inadvertently upload the wrong file by the
deadline. It is your responsibility to ensure that you receive and check the digital receipt of
your submission to confirm that everything is as you want it to be assessed. Do also keep an
electronic and hard copy yourself.

In the recent past television, viewership has been moving from broadcast modes of distribution to on demand services. The temporal displacement provides the television industry an aspect that gives the viewers, an opportunity to re-view the show again thus representing in the viewer response to what is called postmodern schizophrenia (Booth 2011). According to postmodern theorists, the current era forms a particular temporal alignment. The concept of the past or the future no longer exists, but instead, a mindless and instantaneous feel of the present exist. This era is marked by complete instantaneity and pure proximity of things, ushering the audience into an era of simultaneous happenings in which they experience a wide range of temporalities all at the same time. The concept of the past or the future still exists, but there is an experience of a continuous and stimulated present making popular media lead the audience in understanding time differently. Traditional broadcast media encourage this temporal misalignment through new technology, re-run programs, and episode breaks while still providing a form of temporal permanence (Griffin 2011).
