The rail transport has been neglected over the years since 1950s and almost ceasing in early 1990’s. However, rail system has witnessed huge growth in recent years as a result of huge investments by both Central and Local Government. Rail transport in Auckland has grown significantly up from approximately a million trips p.a to 5 million trips to 5 million passengers in 1992 and 2005/06 respectively. In March 2006, rail commuting attained a new monthly record of 545000, 39% increase on the same month in 2005. Investments in rail transport network include: Britomart Transport Centre worth $204 mill ion, track duplication and augmentation, remanufactured trains, station upgrades, and so forth (Greer et al. 2011).
