There is a high personal and organisational cost of leaving a job, and this could explain the reasons why employee retention remains a focus of top-level managers today. It could also explain the reason why organisations incur extra cost of setting up a fully functional human resource department (Mitchell, Holton, Lee, Sablynski, & Erez, 2001; Holton et al., 2013). Employees are a source competitive advantage for any organisation, and constitute a major part of their operational costs (Holton et al., 2013). Since the evolution of the human resource discipline, attention has been on the reason they people leave, with a focus on the role of job satisfaction, organisational commitment, job alternatives and others, although research report shows that work attitudes plays only a small role of employee retention. Therefore, attention is shifting to emerging employee retention concepts like job embeddedness. This study focuses on the issue of employee retention and why job embeddedness is the new focus.

Assessment 2 – Critical literature review report & presentation

Due Date: Part 1 – written report due Week 5, Sunday 2nd December 2018, 6pm (submission via

Learning@Griffith).

Part 2 – presentation due Fridays in Weeks 3-5, submission of PowerPoint via
Learning@Griffith @9pm Week 3 regardless of presentation time).

Weighting: Part 1 (20%) + Part 2 (20%) = Total 40%

Assignment Task:
This is an individual assessment task which requires students to further explore the topic and area of
research identified in the paper chosen for the Critical Analysis Test (Assessment 1) and will be
completed in two parts. Part 1 is the Critical Literature Review written report, and Part 2 is the Oral
Presentation.
Part 1 – The Critical Literature Review written report: In 1000 words (±10%), students are required to
develop a problem statement using a minimum of six (6) research-based journal articles, students
must include the selected paper from the critical analysis test (Assessment 1). This task requires you
to demonstrate your understanding of the literature on the particular topic you chose to analyse for
Assessment 1. Your understanding is demonstrated by analysing and then synthesising the
information to:
• Determine what has already been written on a topic
• Establish the significance of the topic
• Identify previous approaches to the topic
• Identify central issues in the field
• Integrate what previous researchers have found
• Evaluate likely solutions that researchers have recommended
• Identify important issues still unresolved
This written assessment should have an essay structure that includes (1) Introduction, (2) Body, (3)
Conclusion and (4) Reference List. These headings are only guidelines as to how to structure the
content of your essay. No table of contents required. Please use APA6 referencing style for your
reference list and in text referencing.
Critical Analysis:
Students are required to clearly articulate and critically evaluate the key features of their chosen
literature sources. Students should be aware that using websites, magazines, or other non-academic
sources is unsuitable and will negatively influence marks, and that the analysis is only to be based on

the topic you used in Assessment 1. Students should note that a good critical literature review would
aim to cover important, relevant, and up-to-date literature (where possible less than 10 years old).
You will provide an insightful analysis of the ideas and conclusions presented in the literature that
points out similarities and differences, and identifies gaps in the literature for future research. Please
take care with your referencing and paraphrasing of the literature as you will be penalised for incorrect
referencing or the omission of your sources.

• Assignments not submitted to the online submission link WILL NOT be marked.
• Assignments that have zero percent (0%) text matching will not be marked.
• Assignment to be written using Times New Roman, 12-point font with 1.5 line spacing. Penalty
applies if written using other fonts such as Aria, Calibri, etc.

Part 2 – Presentation: On the basis of your problem statement (which you have developed in Part 1),
you will deliver an oral presentation explaining the industry implications of this problem. This could
include the importance of, factors that have contributed to, and lessons to be learnt from this problem.
Students will deliver the presentation in a Pecha Kucha style, in which 20 slides are shown for 20
seconds each (6 minutes and 40 seconds in total). Presentations will be in seminars in Weeks 3-5, ppt
slides are due in Week 3 submitted online to Learning@Griffith link @9pm regardless of presentation
times.
For ease of marking and feedback, each group is required to provide a printed copy of the PowerPoint
slides prior to their scheduled presentations. Depending on readability, it is acceptable to print 2 to 4
slides per page (please ensure you can read all contents on slides). No notes pages are required, please
print black & white, double sided.

• Presentation slides not submitted online will not be marked.
• The order for presentations will be decided in class and posted on the course site.
• Late penalties for submission or non-appearance at your presentation time will be delivered
where appropriate.
• If you have any issues around your presentation time you should communicate with your tutor
as soon as possible.
