Your coursework task this Semester is to organise and write an academic research report. To
complete this task successfully, you will need to demonstrate your competence in a wide range of
skills including analysing and discussing research findings, using citations and referencing, applying
critical thinking, and using academic language.
Task:
 Firstly, you will take part in a survey. Students at XJTLU are potential stakeholders for the
products made by many companies. You will be allocated one aspect of Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR), then contribute to an online discussion forum to identify how CSR affects
your decisions to buy products.
 Your research questions are:
RQ1 What are students’ attitudes towards CSR issues?
RQ2 In what ways do students’ attitudes toward [ethical issues/ the environment/
legal responsibility/ philanthropy/ economic responsibility]* affect their intentions to
buy?

* choose the appropriate aspect of CSR from your discussion
 You should write an introduction which explains Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and how
students’ intentions to buy could be influenced by CSR. In your introduction, use relevant
academic literature relating to CSR to provide a background; then detail how CSR affects
consumers’ intentions to buy products.
 Use the results of the quantitative survey to identify students’ attitudes towards CSR issues;
 Use the results of the qualitative discussion forum to identify how CSR issues affect the intentions
of the students in your discussion group to buy products. Use critical thinking to report on the
students’ comments.
 Critically discuss the quantitative and qualitative findings and write a research report which
presents your findings and provides recommendations.

Description

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept defines the social, ethical, and environmental responsibilities of a business organization (Carroll, 1991). It is concept that can be traced to the early 20th century reflecting on Ford Motor Company’s aim which was to do as much as possible for everyone touched by the organization, to make money and wisely spend it, create employment, and produce cars that benefit the people (Wonpitch, Minakan, Powpaka, &Laohavichien, 2016).  However, the concept gained increased use in the late 20th century, mainly driven by a number of factors like environmental awareness, competition, regulatory environment, and others (Crane, Matten& Spence, 2013). Today, CSR is a standard practice in most industries, with annual CSR reporting a mandatory for most organizations. The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of CSR on intention of student  to buy.
