The tourism industry is one of the rapidly growing industries in the world. In the last few years, the industry has recorded significant growth in different segments. This growth is facilitated by among others the technology revolution, improvement in means of transport, a growing middle class, and many other factors (Gossling& Hall, 2006). However, this growth has come with different negative effects, especially on sustainability issues. Hotel industry operates in some of the most sensitive environments and operations are likely to negatively impact on sustainability efforts. As the world becomes increasingly aware of the need for sustainability, the industry has made effort to enact regulations and benchmarks that encourage sustainability (Rodríguez-Antón, del Mar Alonso-Almeida, Celemín, & Rubio, 2012). One of such benchmarks is the Sustainable Tourism Best Practices, which is a tool for facilitating sustainable business practices for hotel and tour operators. The tool helps hotels and tour operators to benchmark their operations toward sustainable development.
