While the industry has been growing in the world, soccer in Australia has remained underdeveloped owing to bad management. Since the first game was played in 1880 on Australian fields, it was not until 1977 that there were efforts to organize a competitive league.
The management of soccer in Australia has been dodged by corruption and conflicts of interest. The Crawford report which was prepared by the Independent Soccer Review set up by the Minister of Sport came up with various recommendations that helped to restructure the governance of soccer in Australia.
