Changes in the American Family have influenced the current Dickens family. These changes include cohabiting and single parenting. The 21-year-old Ashante Dickens is the mother of the one-year-old Tristan. From her story, we, can are to learn that Dickens moved from her grandmother’s house after becoming pregnant possibly after cohabiting. Unlike in the past where people involved in romantic relationships married, the changing situation in the American family eventually led to her getting the pregnancy and having to leave her grandmother’s house. The fact that Ashanti was in her late teenage years when she got pregnant sows the changes in the current families where young people are cohabiting for several years before separating or marrying. About half of cohabiting children in the modern American family have no biological children while a large number have a biological child from one of the partners. After cohabiting couples marry, they are more likely to divorce compared to those that did not cohabit before marrying. Ashante was cohabiting before, and just like many other young people, she was testing the relationship’s viability for marriage although she is determined to study and become an elementary school teacher. Children of cohabiting parents just like divorced parents exhibit lower well-being and so does Tristen compared to children of normal married families.
