Families and Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment

Introduction
Kaufman and Kaufman (1992) discuss the types of families that present for therapy. In some ways, the family type model mirrors the stages of change and motivational interviewing strategies of identifying where each client or family is in the process of working with AOD issues.
There is also a high degree of controversy about the ACOA label and the definition and use of the word codependency. As you read these chapters, reflect on your own experience in hearing these definitions used in the media and by persons with whom you may have come into contact. Do you think that these labels are helpful?
