Diverse Cultures, HIV, AIDS, Gambling, and Prevention

Introduction
It could be argued that prevention is the most vital aspect of AOD issues. If we can identify populations and persons at risk to addictive behaviors and intervene before the destructive pattern begins, this will be of tremendous benefit to individuals, families, and society. It could also be argued that all addictive behaviors are an attempt to manage emotional states, but misguided in that the individual searches for an external source, rather than learning and being confident of internal sources for dealing with stress. As you read Chapter 12 of your text in this unit, reflect on how you might become involved in prevention efforts.

In addition, this unit explores the following factors:
• It is possible that in your professional life you will need to provide treatment to a person with HIV/AIDS. Ask yourself what your comfort level is in interacting with or providing treatment to such a person. It is important that you be knowledgeable and prepared to offer helpful assistance. Chapter 12 is useful for dispelling some of the unfounded fears about HIV/AIDs, and for knowing risk factors and high-risk populations.
• Gambling problems affect whole families, especially children. It is important that mental health counselors either know how to treat gambling and other addictions or that they know their limitations and where to refer clients who present with these problems.
• Sociocultural groups differ in their attitudes toward alcohol and drug abuse. The addiction counselor is challenged to meet each cultural group on their terms and to understand that treatment approaches must be tailored to meet the cultural needs of the client.

Objectives
To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of recent and relevant literature related to providing culture specific treatment.
2. Discuss continuum of care as related to theoretically based treatment.
3. Show an awareness of the impact of treatment on clients from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
4. Demonstrate an ability to identify resources for chemically affected clients and their families.

As a counselor in a community agency specializing in adolescent addiction treatment, the middle school has asked you to prepare a prevention program to be presented to parents and students. Recently, several students have been caught smoking pot and drinking wine on school premises. The administration is fearful that this may become more prevalent and would like to take proactive steps to prevent further incidents. Please indicate what Internet resources might be given to parents and students so they can learn more about addiction.
