Theories of motivation try to explain the strategies that can be used by management to motivate employees. Most of these theories including Maslow, Herzberg and others look into the relationship between employee needs and their level of motivation motivation. However Vroom expectancy theory looks into the perception of employee and the relationship between efforts, performance and rewards. Vroom identifies three variables including valence, instrumentality and expectancy. Vroom used these three variables to explain the relationship between employee efforts, performance and rewards. Vrooms theory is purely based on the perception of the employee regarding these three variables. This paper looks into the description of Vroom expectancy theory in the process of employee motivation.
