Description

It is well acknowledged that the duration of catheterization is directly related to the risk of developing urinary tract infection. In this regard, Lai and Fontecchio (2002) observe that during short-term catheterization, the incidences of infections are about 3 to 10%. On the other hand, patients who undergo long term catheterization have a 90% to 100% chance of developing bacteriuria (Lai & Fontecchio, 2002). Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) can lead to major complications and death and the most affected are higher-risk patients and those requiring long-term hospitalization.
