Characteristics and Feature of Escherichia Coli Gastroenteritis

This pathological study was carried out to determine the characteristics and features of Escherichia coli associated with gastroenteritis in individual regardless of their age.

Characteristics and Feature of Escherichia Coli Gastroenteritis

Fecal samples from the patients were examined both macroscopically and by culture for the purpose of isolating the Escherichia coli organism. These fecal samples were preferred because they provided information unobtainable from any other material, such as vomit and swabs of pus from the open wounds, ear, or from other areas.

Characteristics and Feature of Escherichia Coli Gastroenteritis

MacConkey agar was used for the isolation of the Escherichia coli, while the Sorbitol agar was used for differentiating between enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli from other sub-types since EHEC does not ferment sorbitol as opposed to other Escherichia subtypes. Results showed that EHEC was the major cause of gastroenteritis in all age groups.
