Career counseling has evolved over a period long period of time that can be described in different stages. In each and every stage, there were major developments that took place. There were additions and subtractions that were made to streamline the counseling profession. While each can be considered important in regard to the contributions that it made to the field of counseling, there were some stages that made more impact than others.
The first stage in development of career history in the United States took place between 18990 and 1919 (Brown & Lent, 2005). This stage was mainly characterized by placement services that were offered for the growing urban and industrial society. This stage can be considered important in the development of career counseling because it laid foundation for the later development.
