For a long time there has been a controversy on the applicability of the Archard equation as a method calculating wear between surfaces in contact. This had been attributed by the ignorance of mechanical engineers to research on the calculation of wear using the finite element analysis. They viewed finite element analysis as just a means of determining the loads required for design analysis. In other cases, many assumptions were made regarding the effects of wear on the life and performance of various products. When structures are subjected to repeated frictions and loadings, they undergo changes that are usually not calculated during finite element analysis. It is therefore important to calculate the effects on these structures to avoid ignoring an important aspect of wear.
