The concept lean system emanated with Toyota and was given a wide publicity by Womack and Jones when he authored ‘The Machine That Changed the World’. The authors highlighted some of Toyota’s secrets towards its prominence in the world with its pursuit to creation of value by elimination of waste (Womack and Jones, 1996). Similarly, Slack, Chambers and Johnston, (2010) describes the lean concept as the elimination of all waste so as to build up an operation that is faster, more reliable, enhances the quality of the products and services. The lean concept is applicable in all business operations as it is the goal of any business to offer superior goods and services to their customers. This paper explores how lean could be applied and implemented in a supermarket.
