Researches into risk behaviors as well as protective means among adolescents are very prevalent in the health, social, and behavioral sciences. Some of the high risk activities in adolescence include; substance abuse, unprotected sex, and violence. Low socio- economic status among the adolescents predicts their involvement in risky behaviors like substance abuse and violence. Most of the people who are engaged in violence and early pregnancies are those who are not well educated and are jobless (Biglan et al, 2005). Low socio- economic statuses among the youths drive them to social evils like inconsistence in condom use and engagement in unprotected sexual activities because either they do not have money to buy contraceptives or do not know their uses. Education is an imperative aspect among youths but it is only attained by the middle and high social economic status youths and hence the others are not advantaged to know the effects of engaging in socially ill behaviors like substance abuse, unprotected sexual intercourse, and violence among others (Biglan et al, 2005). The youths engage in violent activities like snatching, robbery with violence and stealing in order to get money either to buy drugs or alcohol. This therefore shows that low socio-economic status in society can best explain why the adolescents engage in risky behaviors.
