Analysis of BP compliance with OHMS
OHSMS is an international system that mainly promotes occupational health and safety in the working environment. It provides a framework that allows any organization to identify and control the health and safety risk (Saccaro, 1999; Erickson, 1996). It is also aimed at reducing potential accidents, and help in legislative compliance to improve the overall performance of the organization. OHAS 18001 is an internationally recognized assessment specification that identifies occupational health and safety management systems (EOS, 2010). This system was developed by leading trade bodies, international standards and certification bodies in order to bridge the gap in case where there is no third party certification international standard that exists. This system is already designed to comply with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 which also assist organizations to meet health and safety obligations in a more efficient manner. Having worked with British Petroleum (BP), I found that the company has worked to comply with provision of OHSMS and OHSAS 18001 but there are different areas that the company needs to address (EOS, 2010). Workers safety has been a major are of concern for the company and the degree of weakness in the system has been exemplified by the recent oil spill in Gulf of Mexico which lead to death of 11 of its workers.
