Low Cost Airlines Strategy In Africa: The Case Of Kenya. Low cost carrier is a concept that is synonymous with the airline operations in the developed world. Though the mixed performances of low cost carriers, they have become a major force to reckon with. The strategy is new in Africa though there have been several start-ups which operated to only a short period of time before they are acquired by major carriers or close down for lack of competitive agenda. This project analyzes and discusses the low cost airlines strategy in Africa with a focus on the Kenyan case by analyzing three low cost carrier companies; Five Forty Aviation and Jambojet which were adopted as low cost carriers in order to compete with large airlines in the turbulent airline industry. The study aims at establishing the benefits of low cost carrier strategy and how it should be successful implemented and adopted in Africa. By taking a case study of Five Forty Aviation (Fly540) which is a successful strategy in Nairobi, the study shows that other African and by extension developing countries can adopt the strategy and benefit from its performance. The study indicates that since low cost carrier strategy is successful in developed countries such as United Kingdom and Japan, it can also be successful in African countries.

Primary data will be collected from Jambo Jet and Five Forty Aviation Ltd about the low cost airlines strategy in Kenya and how the companies have survived, their performance, the challenges they face, and the most appropriate strategy for start-ups. A total of 100 managers from the two companies will be investigated through questionnaires while interview method will cover 10 managers from the two companies.
