Siddhartha, a 1922 novel by Hermann Hesse, is weaved around the life of a young man, Siddhartha who is on a spiritual and intellectual journey. The book reflects the culture of ancient Hindus and ancient Chinese. It is based on the early life of Gautama Buddha.  Hesse narrates the struggle that young people go through in search for self actualization. More importantly, the author brings out the centrality and influences of the religion in the search for truth. In the novel, the contrast of eastern religions ad the western religion clearly comes out. While the western religion beliefs in spiritual religious figures, the Buddhist beliefs in actual religious figure like Gautama Buddha. Demonstrating this experience, Siddhartha argues that the river and the source are all but one thing. From the time he was at the river bank, the river has always been flowing. The wisdom he has acquired through this experience is that “time is not real”.

Overall, the realization that time is not real and the unity of experiences is some of the indelible memories from this novel. Does it mean that the concepts of age, lateness or time barred are all but illusion? This sound more philosophical than religious.
