1. Discuss the non-English European efforts to colonize the New World. Why did Europeans begin exploration when they did—what conditions, advances, circumstances led to exploration? What at were the Europeans originally seeking? Where did they end up settling? What cultures did they encounter? What did they hope to get from the New World? How successful were they? How did their discoveries affect both Europe and the New World in general?
2. Examine the English settlement movement in the New World. Why did the English concentrate on North America? Where did they settle first? How were the different colonies founded–who settled where? How successful were these colonies? How did they relate to the mother country?
3. Explain the war of independence in North America. What were some of the factors (economic, social, political) which pushed the colonists towards war with Britain? What factions developed over the need for war? When did the war begin, and how successful were the respective sides? What was the outcome of the war?
